FAQ's - We Want to Answer Your Questions

How is Advance the Grade different from traditional learning centers?

Advance the Grade tutors come to you at your home. We also tailor the teaching to your child’s individual personality and specific needs with a focus on your child’s school curriculum. The result? Your child will receive great tutoring without you having to drive anywhere.

Do I have to commit to a minimum number of tutoring sessions and pay for expensive assessment tests?

No. We do not require you to commit to a minimum number of tutoring sessions. In fact, you may cancel our services at any time with at least 24-hour advance notice to us. We also do not require expensive assessment testing (many learning centers charge up to $200 for assessment testing). We are normally able to make an assessment with your help and after reviewing recent schoolwork and tests.

Is my child going to have to learn material that does not relate to school curriculum?

No. Advance the Grade tutors will teach from your child’s school curriculum, not a pre-determined program that may not relate at all to what your child is working on in school. This method allows the tutor to focus on your child’s specific needs for success in the classroom.

How do you decide which tutor is right for my child?

We pay careful attention to matching your child with the right tutor. By phone or in your home, we offer a free consultation to assess your child’s academic needs, learning style, and personality. Based on the consultation, we select a tutor that is a good match to address those needs and connect with your child.

What if I want to switch to a different tutor?

If for any reason (such as a personality or scheduling conflict) you would like to switch tutors, you may do so as long as we have another tutor available.  We are not always able to guarantee a different tutor will be available.

Is the tutor available for consultations with teachers?

Yes. Advance the Grade tutors are available for consultations with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. For brief consultations, the consultations are at no additional charge. For more lengthy consultations, clients will be charged in ¼ hour increments at the tutoring session rate. Lengthy consultations must be requested in advance and scheduled with your tutor. Mitch Olson, our owner and Education Director, is also available at any time to discuss any matter important to you.

Do you provide educational services to home school families?

Yes. Advance the Grade can help establish your home school arrangement and provide any tutoring services necessary to make it work for your family. We will make sure the home school arrangement and tutoring is in compliance with Nebraska home schooling laws.

Do you provide test preparation for college entrance exams (ACT and SAT)?

Yes. We do have tutors who can help your student prepare for both exams.  We are not, however, test preparation experts.  To have time to prepare, we recommend you contact us at least eight weeks prior to the exam, and for the best results we recommend at least two hours of test prep tutoring per week.

Do you provide tutoring services for college students?

Yes. We have tutors who have the experience and credentials for college level subjects. For college students, the tutoring can take place at a public location on campus or a nearby library.

Do your tutors work with learning disabled or Special Needs children?

Yes. Many Advance the Grade tutors are certified to teach Special Needs children. These tutors will be able to work in conjunction with your child’s I.E.P. or 504 Plan.

Do you provide assistance to foreign students who need English training?

Yes. Advance the Grade has ESL certified tutors available to help foreign nationals learn English and/or pass the TOEFL exam (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

What geographical areas do you serve?

Advance the Grade provides highly qualified tutors throughout the entire Omaha area. If you are outside the Omaha area, please contact us anyway. We may still be able to find you a tutor.

What learning materials are used during the tutoring sessions?

We tutor from your child’s school curriculum, so your child will need to have the necessary school books and materials at home for each tutoring session. Occasionally, our tutors will provide or recommend additional learning materials, but only if it complements what your child is learning at school.

Can the tutoring take place outside the home?

We come to you. For students age 16 and above who have their parent’s permission, the tutoring session can be held at a school or nearby library. For all other students, the tutoring must take place at your home in an open area (i.e., not behind closed doors). We require a parent or guardian over age 21 to be in the home for the entire tutoring session.

How do we arrange the tutoring schedule? Is there an hour per week requirement?

The Advance the Grade tutor matched with your child will talk with you to arrange a tutoring schedule that fits everyone’s schedule. Unlike many other tutoring services, we do not require a minimum number of tutoring hours per week. For the tutoring to be effective, however, we recommend at least one hour per week.
